In 2008, Queensland state primary and secondary school students are exercising their bodies as well as their brains as they celebrate the Year of Physical Activity.
The Year was announced by the Education and Training Minister Rod Welford to support the long term integration of Smart Moves: Physical Activity Programs in Queensland State Schools.
The Year of Physical Activity and Smart Moves initiatives aim to highlight the links between regular physical activity, better health and improved academic achievement for students, and to further engage educators in the process of including physical activity across the curriculum.
The Smart Moves initiative sees Queensland state schools embracing regular physical activity. Primary schools students now participate in at least 30 minutes of daily physical activity linked in with the school curriculum. High school students participate in a minimum of two hours each week.
Smart Moves will be introduced in July 2008 and will ensure all state school students from Prep to Year 12 establish healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
