Message from the Premier and Minister for Education, Training and the Arts

Welcome to the first annual edition of schools+parents which gives all Queensland parents important information about their child's education in 2008.

This year heralds a new era in senior schooling with the introduction of the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) which will be awarded to eligible students when they complete Year 12.

Greater consistency in what is taught in Years 1-9 in our schools, and how achievements are assessed and reported will also be delivered as part of the new Queensland Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting framework.

Another first for education will take place in May this year. More than 200 000 Queensland school students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will take part in the inaugural national literacy and numeracy tests that replace previous statebased assessment.

This year promises to be an exciting time for state primary and secondary school students who are celebrating the Year of Physical Activity in schools.

Parents will also be interested in articles about the recommended television time for students, how to navigate the technology maze and the potential benefits of school-based apprenticeships and traineeships.

This edition covers a wide range of important issues relevant to parents and carers of students of all ages. We know you will enjoy it.
