The IESIP-SRA grant provides supplementary assistance to state schools with indigenous Australian student populations to progress educational outcomes for these students.
IESIP-SRA funds are to be used to supplement school programs designed to achieve the learning, school and workforce outcomes described in the school's SAROP, specifically as they relate to Indigenous Australian students. The primary focus of IESIP-SRA funds expenditure should be towards improving the education outcomes of Indigenous Australian students, particularly in the areas of literacy and numeracy, attendance, retention and school completion.
Funds may be used within an individual school or pooled across a local or district cluster.
Schools receiving more than $3 000 in IESIP-SRA funds in a calendar year are required to spend at least 25% of their allocation on the employment and/or training of Indigenous Australian people in support of enhanced student outcomes.
IESIP funds must not be used for capital expenditure, including capital/minor works, facilities development and maintenance, the purchase of plant and equipment, vehicles, sporting equipment, computers or other hardware. Any expenditure on items of this type must be debited against core school funds.
IESIP funds received during a calendar year must be spent or committed for expenditure by 31 December. Funds not spent or committed by this date will be recouped by the department. For information on this recoupment process, please refer to Process for Adjusting IESIP Funds - 2003 (new window) [an error occurred while processing this directive]

A formula-generated cash grant calculated for each semester using current semester enrolment data and paid directly to host schools.
| Payment | Month | Proportion of Allocation Paid | Enrolments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1, Payment 1 | February | 80% of estimated Semester 1 allocation | previous July census |
| Semester 1, Payment 2 | April | balance of actual Semester 1 allocation | February enrolment |
| Semester 2, Payment 1 | July | 80% of estimated Semester 2 allocation | February enrolment |
| Semester 2, Payment 2 | October | balance of actual Semester 2 allocation | July Census |
A minimum 80% of state IESIP-SRA funds are distributed to schools using a weighted student enrolment for each school.
The weighted enrolment is calculated using the formula
| WE = ((FTE p x 2) + (FTE 1-7 x LEI p)) x DI |
where
| WE | weighted enrolment | |
| FTE p | full-time equivalent Preschool Indigenous Australian enrolment | |
| FTE 1-7 | full-time equivalent Indigenous Australian enrolment Years 1 to 7 (includes ungraded and ascertained students in integrated settings) | |
| LEI p | the school's learning enrichment index primary | |
| DI | the school's distance index. |
The weighted enrolment is calculated using the learning enrichment index secondary and the formula
| WE = (FTE 8-12 x LEI s) x DI |
where
| WE | weighted enrolment | |
| FTE 8-12 | full-time equivalent Indigenous Australian enrolment Years 8 to 12 (includes ungraded and ascertained students in integrated settings) | |
| LEI s | the school's learning enrichment index secondary | |
| DI | the school's distance index. |
The weighted enrolment is calculated using a combination of the primary and secondary formulae.
The weighted enrolment is calculated using a LEI that is the maximum value.
Centres for continuing secondary education enrolments are included with the host secondary school/college and are therefore weighted by the learning enrichment index for the host school.
Enrolments for special education units and classes are included with the host school and are therefore weighted by the learning enrichment index for the host school.
The rate per weighted enrolment will vary from semester to semester depending on the total of IESIP-SRA funds available for distribution.
